Snuffle Update: 9-11-2008
I have not had any outbreaks for about 2 mths now. All of the rabbits that had it were put to sleep. I have done a couple test breeding and everything has gone great. I am now planning future breedings, and will be selling rabbits on a limited basis. I still ask everyone who is getting a rabbit from me or anyone else, to put it in quarantine at least for a month if they have other rabbits.

Snuffles
Please Read:
This year at Nationals we brought back “Snuffles”. We have kept it on the down low until we had it tested and until we knew the full extent of the problem. We don’t want to point any fingers or to play the blame game but we DO want everyone to be aware that Snuffles is serious business and it doesn’t just go away. It all starts with one rabbit and spreads quickly. If a rabbit even MIGHT have it they should be kept at home and in quarantine or euthanized.
We did not buy a sick rabbit and bring it home that way but it WAS from Nationals. We got our 1st snotty nose 2 weeks after Nationals. All it takes is one sick rabbit to pass it on to others. ONE sneeze. ONE time on the show table. And at a show like Nationals it can be detrimental to the breed. Thank Goodness we are not a COD holder but we DO love all our rabbits and it still is huge hit.
After Nationals it took 2 weeks to get our 1st case. Then the pregnant mommas came next. They all had to be put to sleep. We were lucky enough to save Lacy’s litter but lost the others. The babies are in their own quarantine now just to be safe.
We now will have a CLOSED HERD until we are sure it is safe to once again share our lines with others. I will be working with my vet on this until it is safe and clear. We will also do a few “test” breedings before we open our herd up again. What doesn’t kill you (or them) makes you stronger. I just hope in the end everything works out. Oh and to answer everyone’s question…. Lantana and the other winning rabbits are safe. We got lucky. :).
But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember snuffles is nasty stuff. And it is NOT something to play with. Rabbits who even show the slightest signs should be left at home and not in the show room. This stuff spreads like the plague and can be just as deadly. RABBITS DO DIE FROM SNUFFLES.
